Everyone lives in a watershed, whether we have a stream running through our yard or not, we still impact our waterdshed through water run-off, groundwater, and especially our storm drain system.
Our lawns and gardens are connected to streams, too! Rain and snow-melt run through our lawns and gardens into a storm drain, road side ditch or down through the soil into groundwater. All of that water eventually flows into our local streams.
When water flows over our lawns and gardens it picks up harmful contaminants that are then carried to streams. Contaminants like weed killers, fertilizers, slug bait, and pesticides end up in our streams, harming or killing the life that depend on them.
Responsible gardeners recognize the negative impacts of these contaminants not only on our environment but also on our own health.
The YWSC developed the Green Lawn and Garden sign project to bring individuals new pride in their lawns and gardens because they choose to garden without compromising the health of their community or the environment.
